If you think that life is unfair, think again. This is a true life account of what happened to this particular family.
Not so long ago, there lived this family of four. They belong to the low income bracket and lived an ordinary life. One day, disaster struck. The son was found unconscious on a field and was sent to the hospital where he fell into a coma. He had to depend on a life support machine for survival but the parents never gave up. Several months later, he regained conscious and could breathe independently. Just when everyone thinks he's alright, the family was dealt another blow. Although he could open his eyes, he is not aware of his surroundings. Meaning, his brain is damaged. How could life be so unfair to a person who exudes such fighting spirit to survive? Whose family never gave up their faith in him? The doctor told them that it is impossible for him to recover and rates his chances at 0%. A second opinion revealed the same diagnosis. To add to their woes, his mother, the sole breadwinner of the family, spiraled into depression and had to seek treatment. His father gave up his job to care for him full time. With the hospital fees costing a bomb and further plans to put him up in a home, they are at their wits end. Until now, the truth on that ill-fated day still eludes them and remains a mystery.
I couldn't bear to look at his son. It's so heart wrenching that I felt like leaving immediately. But the father spoke to me briefly the other day.
Him: I have already acknowledged my fate. I do not want to harbor false hopes when all of us know that he is never going to recover.
I: Hmm..
Him: When the doctor told me that his chance of recovery is close to nil, I did not believe him. I sought a second opinion from this world renowned doctor. That was when I know that I have been deceiving myself all this while.
I: Hmm..
Him: My wife has to work in the day and can only visit him in the evening. She cries everyday and suffers from depression because of him.
I: Hmm..
Him: People raise their kids, we also raise our kids. People's kids become doctors and lawyers, but our boy..
I: Hmm..
Seriously, I really didn't know what to say. I felt like telling him that it's good he accepted the truth and since that's the case, don't be too upset. But nothing came out. Because I know that no amount of words can reduce the pain in his heart.
All of us feel that life is unfair at some point in time. I am guilty of it as well. But remember. "No one ever promised you that life is fair. What you want and what you get are usually two entirely different things".
